Qatar Airways Cancellation and Refund Policy

Flying may feel expensive at first glance but its convenience and time-saving benefit are worth paying the airfares. It is a fact that flight isn’t always on time. But, its biggest perk is that, if an airline messes up in case your flight is late, canceled, or overbooked – there are policies for that. Airlines make compensation for the travelers if trouble is caused due to their mistake.

Thus, as a flyer, you must be aware of the rules, regulations, and policies for cancellation and refund so that you can claim for it. Recently, Qatar Airways has offered flight cancellations and ticket refunds for stranded passengers whose flights were canceled due to government orders or other COVID-19-related issues.

Know when you can qualify for the compensation after flight cancellation:

  • Passengers can request to cancel the flight tickets without any penalty within 24 hours of booking the flight ticket.
  • If a traveler makes the cancellation request after 24 hours of booking the flight tickets leads to a penalty.
  • If a ticket cancellation request is made within 24 hours of flight departure then passengers have to pay the cancellation fee of around $100-$400.
  • Usually, the flight tickets are booked a few months in advance to avoid last-minute hassles. If the flight is booked a week before the departure date and the cancellation request is made just hours before the departure time then passengers have to pay the penalty charges. The passenger will be liable to the penalty if a cancellation request is made from their side.
  • On the other hand, if the flight has been canceled due to Covid and other governmental issues then no cancellation charges will be applicable.

General Condition for change in booking with Qatar:

  • Changes will be applicable only if the fare rule allows a change of reservation
  • Change fee applies as mentioned in the service charges below.
  • For re-issuance or exchange of ticket before departure penalty will be charged. Change penalty before departure will be charged as per the applicable fare difference.
  • In case of no-show, either no-show or change fee whichever is higher will be charged
  • A new ticket should be equal to or higher than the previous ticket fare value otherwise no residual value will be refunded to the passenger.

Service Charges for Modifying the Booking:

  • For making a change in the flight or the date i.e modified by phone, at the airport, or through a Qatar Airways Ticket Office include a non-refundable service fee starting from $25.
  • For tickets re-issued by phone, at the airport, or through a Qatar Airways Ticket Office, a non-refundable service fee will be $15.

Steps to change or modify the flight tickets:

  • If you are eligible for the changes in the flight tickets then you can call your travel agent to make changes in your flight otherwise you can do it yourself from the website of Qatar Airways. All you need to do is visit the website /of Qatar Airways and from the “Manage flight” tab click the “change flight” or “change flight dates”.
  • The form will require your PNR/ticket number/Privilege Club number and passenger’s last name.

 Delays, Cancellations, and Diversions:

Airlines take all the actions to ensure that you get to your destination on time. USA to India is a fixed schedule but, there may be some time when the flight gets disturbed due to some unavoidable circumstances of bad weather, air traffic control, operational, government decision, or other service considerations. These types of circumstances lead to flight delays, cancellations, or diversions.

The information will be announced nearby the boarding gate area for the flight at a U.S. airport, on the official website (, and via our call centers upon inquiry.

Role of Qatar airways during lengthy tarmac delays:

  • Generally, the flight is on-time as per the schedule but due to some unavoidable reasons, there may be some delay. When a lengthy tarmac delay occurs the Airline takes care of all the essential needs of the passenger. Snacks/food and drinking water are served at regular intervals. Also, there are restroom facilities on board and adequate medical assistance if required by any passenger.
  • Qatar Airways crew will inform the passengers through on-board announcements every 30 minutes regarding the reason for the delay.

Changes in travel itineraries:

If the airline makes any changes in scheduled flight departure time a few days before departure; then the airline will notify passengers through the contact information provided to them. 

Compensation for Flight Delay:

  • Delay of 2 hours at Departure: For flight delay, you are entitled to assistance i.e drink and meal; if necessary, hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and the place of accommodation are also provided by the airline.
  • Delay of 3 hours at Departure: Such passengers are entitled to assistance and financial compensation.
  • For a delay of 5 hours at Departure: For a flight delay of 5 hours or more at departure passengers are entitled to a refund.

How to cancel the Qatar Airways flight ticket?

  • On the official website of Qatar Airways login with the credentials if you are a frequent flyer.
  • Or you can visit the “Manage Trips” tab and enter the reference number and last name of the passenger.
  • Then click on the cancel reservation.
  • If you have booked a round trip then the whole trip needs to be canceled.
  • After confirming the cancellation check the refund status from the “Travel Funds” section.

Ticket Refund policy for Qatar Airways:

A passenger can ask for the repayment of all or a portion of a fare, rate, or charge for unused carriage or service.

  • If the ticket is non-refundable then you cannot claim the refund.
  • If you have booked the refundable ticket then you are eligible for the refund.

You can request the refund directly through Qatar Airways by filling out the form available on the website. 

  • For cancellation of flight within 24 hours of booking passengers can claim for refund irrespective of the ticket type. After 24 hours of booking, the refund will be provided after cancellation charges or penalties.
  • The refund will be provided in the original form of payment after deducting any applicable service charges.
  • For card payment, the refund will be provided within seven business days of receiving your request. On the other hand, for purchases made with cash, check or other forms of payment refund will be provided within 20 business days after receiving your request.

Customer Service Commitment:

  • Deliver Baggage on Time: You have to follow guidelines under Qatar Baggage Policy before packing your bags. For extra baggage, you have to pay extra charges. It is the responsibility of an airline to deliver your checked baggage on time. If the checked baggage of any passenger is delayed or misplaced, the airline put effort to deliver your bags to you within 24 hours. Airlines can also compensate by reimbursing your reasonable and necessary expenses. If the baggage is considered lost, you will be provided a refund if you pay the baggage fee
  • In the case of oversells or Overbooking: Oversell or overbooking may occur due to aircraft weight limit, substituting a smaller aircraft in place of a larger, and lesser number of available seats. Thus, if you have been denied boarding then you can claim compensation and transportation on an alternate flight, provided you have complied with check-in time and other applicable rules. On the other hand, if you do not meet certain criteria you will not be eligible for the compensation.
